The out-of-plane compressive behavior of metallic honeycombs

چکیده

Stainless steel square-honeycombs have been manufactured by slotting together steel sheets and then brazing the assembly. Their out-of-plane compressive response has been measured as a function of the relative density, the ratio of specimen height to cell size, and the degree of constraint associated with bonding of the honeycomb to face-sheets. It has been found that, for the practical range of relative densities (less than 20%), the peak strength is relatively insensitive to both the ratio of the specimen height to cell size and to the presence or absence of bonding to face-sheets. An analytical model, derived from existing models for the buckling of shells, for elastic and plastic buckling of the square-honeycombs is shown to be in good agreement with the experimental measurements. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. Quasistatic Deformation and Failure Modes of Composite Square Honeycombs

Carbon fibre epoxy matrix composite honeycombs have been fabricated by slotting, assembling and adhesively bonding composite laminate sheets with various fibre architectures. Their out-of-plane compressive and in-plane shear responses were measured as a function of relative density, ratio of the cell height to width and the number of cells in the specimen. The measurements indicate that the res...

Aiaa 2002-1766 Size Effects in the Compressive Crushing of Honeycombs

The effect of cell size on the out of plane compressive crushing response of circular cell polycarbonate honeycomb is presented. Over 100 experiments were conducted on specimens ranging in size from 1 to 169 cells (number of cells=N). Experiments showed that for N<19 there was a significant increase in crushing load. The maximum crushing load was observed where N=7. Finite element (FE) analysis...

Compressive Behavior of Fiber-Reinforced Honeycomb Cores

Honeycomb core sandwich panels have found extensive applications particularly in the aerospace and naval industries. In view of the recent interest in alternative, yet strong and lightweight materials, honeycomb cores are manufactured from sisal fiber-reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites and the out-ofplane compressive behaviour of these cores is investigated. The cell wall material is mode...

Mechanical Properties of Additively Manufactured Thick Honeycombs

Honeycombs resemble the structure of a number of natural and biological materials such as cancellous bone, wood, and cork. Thick honeycomb could be also used for energy absorption applications. Moreover, studying the mechanical behavior of honeycombs under in-plane loading could help understanding the mechanical behavior of more complex 3D tessellated structures such as porous biomaterials. In ...
